2016: The Year of the Doula with Penny Simkin

Penny will briefly trace the evolution of birth and postpartum doulas from the “more doulas than clients” era to today’s increasing advocacy of doulas from maternity care providers and third-party payers. Formerly seen as outsiders who complicate care during birth and postpartum, now doulas are on the brink of being sought after and as key to lowering cesarean rates, postpartum mood disorders and increased breastfeeding rates.

Penny will discuss the role of ACOG, Childbirth Connection, and Medicaid in making 2016 the Year of the Doula.
