Doulas as Ambassadors: Working with Low English Proficiency Clients with Megan Shope

Immigrant and refugee women often describe their experience with maternity care in the U.S. as discriminatory. With a scarcity of care providers who understand their background and cultural practices, doulas can play an important role. Despite a heart to work with low English proficiency families, many doulas may find the language barrier and cultural differences intimidating.  In this session, we’ll share the challenges and successes of our collaboration between doulas and community facilitators teaching prenatal classes. Presenters will share best practices and engage in dialogue with doulas who already work and those who wish to work with LEP populations through the lens of a culturally competent pilot study in Latina and Bhutanese communities in Pittsburgh, PA.
