Michael Klein

Dr. Michael Klein is a pediatrician, neonatologist and family physician, a graduate of Stanford Medical School and maternity care researcher for over 40 years. He is best known for being the PI of the only North American RCT of episiotomy, showing that when used routinely it causes the very trauma that it was supposed to prevent.

He is credited with reducing the use of episiotomy from more than 60% in the US and Canada to 12% and a parallel decrease in severe rectal trauma from 4.5% to 1%.

He has worked in Quebec and British Columbia for the regulation of midwifery for more than 20 years and continues to teach midwives at UBC. He is a key investigator on the five year BC study showing the safety of home birth.
